Oklahoma Lemon Law Overview
A purchase of a car, truck, or motor vehicle represents a huge investment of time, effort, and money. It is important for the consumer to trust that their vehicle is in good condition, is safe to drive, and does not present a danger or hazard to other people. Because most of us lack the detailed mechanical training to recognize subtle problems we usually must trust the dealer and have faith in manufacturer warranties.
Unfortunately, unscrupulous sellers take advantage of the trust of innocent consumers and sell less than reliable cars. Purchasing a car can be a long and arduous process, and trying to settle disputes with unprincipled dealers can result in months of frustration and thousands of dollars wasted. Accordingly, Oklahoma enacted a number of statutes called “lemon laws” in order to inform and protect the rights of consumers.
The state of Oklahoma mandates that every new and used vehicle under 10,000 pounds that can be registered is covered under “lemon laws.” These rules extend only to purchases, and do not apply to consumers who lease their motor vehicles. These lemon laws primarily protect consumers by enforcing warranties and other conditions during the transfer of vehicles.
Dealers and manufacturers cannot knowingly sell you a defective vehicle or refuse to honor your claim of warranty.
